Nuclear fission-45 to tango

As I write India is engaged in hectic parleying with the Nuclear Suppliers Group. This 45 member group consisting of most letters of the alphabet (Argentina to the United States) are now engaged in deciding India's nuclear future.
It includes countries like Estonia,Slovakia, Slovenia and Luxembourg which most people would struggle to locate on a map.It includes countries like Latvia, Lithuania, Kazakhstan and Ukraine who owe their existence to the largess (or bumbling depending on how you look at it) of a certain Mikhail Gorbachev and forever exist with the Damocles sword of the Russian bear hanging over them. It includes the Chinese who though the only nuclear weapon state to ratify the IAEA additional protocol, has conveniently chosen to break every rule in the book and merrily proliferate and engage in shady nuclear commerce.
China has now joined countries like Ireland, New Zealand and Austria in holding out against the waiver and in fact could now be leading the dissent. There concerns are that this would set a dangerous precedent, which would jeopardize the long-time efforts of the international nuclear non-proliferation mechanism and also trigger a regional nuclear arms race.
Let's look at the facts. The current nuclear weapons stockpiles are:
USA 5535
Russia 8800
UK 200
France <300
China <160
India 100-140
Pakistan 60-200
N Korea 0-10
Israel 100-200
Of these India is a non signatory to the NPT, Pakistan is failing state and North Korea a rogue state. Israel is an undeclared nuclear power which chooses to be ambiguous in its nuclear status.
Iran and Syria have an existing nuclear programme and are on the way to developing weapons.
The NPT accept it or not is officially dead and it is indeed time that its long suffering carcass were buried.
In today's multipolar world nuclear non proliferation depends on the good offices and the self interests of the nuclear weapons countries and it was time the world woke up to this unpleasant truth.
Till such time as this happens countries like India with a squeaky clean image will have to grovel before midgets while established offenders like China and Pakistan get away scot-free.

A new life

Ah well! The journey of a thousand posts begins with one.
When I left for the UK four years ago I never imagined that I would be computer savvy enough to start my own post or my own website. But that's so much water down the Yamuna or the Thames or the Creed (our local rivulet).
Speaking of rivers, I guess the one causing the most heartburn among our home grown netas today is the Kosi.
Nearly thirteen lakh (that's 1.3 million for you converted desis) people are marooned. People are fleeing for their very lives with nothing but the clothes on their backs. They are sharing their food with stray animals and cattle.
And the political blame game has begun.
Poor Nitish Kumar! He is frothing at the mouth trying to convince all and sundry that somehow the floods are a conspiracy left behind by the Lalu prasad government.
He claims that the Kosi had been disregarded four years ago and that caused it to breach it's embankments now. It had of course somehow been kept in deep freeze these last four years and conspired to flood all and sundry at this most inconvenient time with elections in an year and a half.
Nitish has been very busy the past four years. Being the CM of India's worst governed state is not a joke.He has to be at the forefront of the 'Bihari samman bachao andolan'. He takes up crudgels for the persecuted bihari in Mumbai against Raj Thakeray and his Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (material for a future post?!), demands apologies from the Goa CM for his infamous Bihari beggars remark and giving cycles to school going girls (to change society's perception of them!!!). Unfortunately the 'Bihari bachao movement' seems to have given him a miss.
On the other hand we have India's professional buffoon and darling of the media Laloo Prasad Yadav. He wants Nitish to be tried for genocide. This is because he forced thousands of people to die during the ongoing floods in north-eastern Bihar.
Talk about foot in the mouth disease.
And what does our darling PM do?He plans nuclear commerce, trips to the moon and accompanies his 'Maa Bhavani' on helicopter trips to Bihar.
And all the hapless people can say is 'Hamey baksh do yaar'.
